Poster/Presentation Guidelines

Abstracts Guidelines

Abstracts should be ~300, and no more than 400, words in length. Include a title that concisely and clearly imparts the essence of you project. Then, a good abstract opens with a sentence or two dedicated to outlining the problem you are trying to solve. Next comes a brief description of the method used in the study. The core of the abstract is the description of your results, in 2-3 sentences, followed by the implications or further work suggested by your results. Please follow this format to help ensure that your abstract is accepted.

Poster Guidelines

  1. Prepare your poster for an approximate size of 4 ft wide by 4 ft high. You may print one large format poster on a heavy weight coated paper. If your college does not offer poster printing services, there is a good chance that you can print out 24"x36" posters in a nearby FedEx office.
  2. You may also bring your poster as individual smaller sheets that are glued to a 10 or 12 pt card stock. When using the card stock method, mask the edges of the card stock, then spray the photo mount adhesive evenly on the card stock, mount the paper, press out any waves, and leave it under your biggest chemistry textbook for a night. For best results, use thicker paper; a glossy photo paper also works well.
  3. A metal whiteboard and magnets for mounting will be provided.
  4. Clearly state the title, author(s) and institution(s) on your poster. An abstract is required on every poster.
  5. You will receive an email no later that March 1 informing you of the status of your abstract submission. At that time, a schedule of events will be provided that outlines when and where you'll present your poster or talk.

Oral Presentation Guidelines

  1. Given the limited time we have during the conference, we will not be able to give every abstract a slot for oral presentation. Some of the submissions requesting oral presentations may be asked to present a poster on their work instead. We will notify authors of abstracts selected for oral presentation by email one week before the conference.
  2. Each oral presentation will be 15 minutes, with 3 minutes of questions and answers at the end. Please plan to stay within your time.
  3. Standard audio/visual equipment (microphone, computer projector, overhead projector) will be available for the speakers. If you have special equipment needs, please let us know early at blake.gillespie@csuci.edu
  4. We will have a Windows XP computer available that is set up to show multimedia presentations using PowerPoint or OpenOffice Presenter. Please bring your presentation on a USB flash drive or a CD. You may want to send a PDF copy of your presentation to yourself via e-mail as a backup. Presenters shall load their files to the computer before the symposium begins.
  5. If your presentation uses special applications or has been made for the MacOS platform, plan on bringing your own laptop to avoid compatibility problems.
